My Transition

12 years ago I discovered smoothies. I was at Antoinette’s house in CA. She Vitamixed us a smoothie and I was hooked. I bought a Vitamix, protein powder and all the various ingredients. For a long time I was making them in the name of health and experimenting with frozen fruits and vegetables. When I got bored, I tried a smoothie pre-made delivery service. I quickly realized – like everyone else – that it represented the ultimate in laziness, and I was single handedly destroying the planet with the packaging. Plus, I had the recipes, I could just make the smoothies myself. But my laziness overtook me and I started buying smoothies at Jamba Juice. Then I went dry for a period of time and just stopped cold turkey.

Not long ago, I discovered that avocados can morph a smoothie into a creamy delight and I pulled my Vitamix back out. My smoothie now resembles a creamy pseudo-milkshakes: Oat milk, peanut butter, protein powder, avocado and date syrup for sweetener. I’ve never calculated the caloric content in the concoction, but it’s got to be as much, if not more, than a milkshake, which, let’s be real, is what I want anyway. So today I decided to just make a fucking milkshake instead: 1/4 pint of pistachio ice cream, a large tablespoon of peanut butter and oat milk. Just those three ingredients made a delicious – and most likely fewer calorie – milkshake. TBH, I felt less guilty after consuming my milkshake than I have been after my 5000 calorie “smoothie.”

So transition completed from smoothies to milkshakes, and I couldn’t be happier.
