Say “no” to the tattoo

Women, tattoos are not a form of self-care, nor do you “deserve” them.

I’m constantly seeing women who don’t have enough money to pay their rent continue to spend outrageous amounts of money on tattoos. Isn’t this another way that we prioritize our bodies over our minds and our ability? Even in the face of unemployment, debt and potential homelessness, women rack up credit for tattoos with the justification that somehow they deserve it. Wait. What? We deserve to have our bodies poked and prodded in the name of expression? It seems to me to be another warped societal message. One that can be damaging to the pocketbook, not to mention the skin.

No. What we deserve is a job that pays us enough to support ourselves to live safely and comfortably. THAT is what we deserve.

Tattoo artists – the majority of whom are men – make a lot of money off of women. Why in god’s name are we giving male artists money that we, as women, need to live on and making ourselves even more dependent on them? At the very least, if you want the tattoo and have the money to get one, go to a female tattoo artist. I bet she’s not charging as much as the dude.

I’ve been told that I’m old and that my “brand” of feminism is stodgy. Well, whatever. I use reason and sense in my brand of feminism, and this, to me, makes perfect sense. Think about it.
